<image:caption>Mustela Baby Cleansing Water - No-Rinse $16 There will be things people get you that you don’t ask for you and you’ll be like, hmm, okay, and what is this exactly? That was this product for me. I tucked it into our diaper station basket and figured I’d rarely use it. Wrong. I loooooved this. (It was gifted from a mother-of-four who also happens to be a nurse, so I shouldn’t have been surprised!) I’d squirt a little of this on one of our soft muslin burp clothes and just lightly dab our daughters face and any areas. They say not to “over bathe” your little ones so this was a perfect option for a quick clean-up without a full bath.</image:caption>

<image:caption>MYLICON Infant Gas Relief Drops $10 Another one of those that’s just good to have on hand. The Gripe Water might ease slightly unsettled tummies, or distract a baby with the sweet taste, but this is actually formulated to provide gas relief. This was recommended by our pediatrician and it worked well for us. Also, I love to see this brand + Tylenol shifting to dye-free formulas!</image:caption>

<image:caption>wellements Organic Gripe Water $10 Some people swear by Gripe Water. I found it helpful in those tricky moments where our baby seemed inconsolable and we couldn’t figure out why. It seemed like the taste would help take her mind off whatever it was that was bothering her and give her enough of a “pause” she could get back to sleep. The Wellements brand gripe water is an organic herbal remedy - there are actual medicinal gas drops if you know your honey’s tummy is hurting! (And, of course, always ask your pediatrician for what they recommend!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream 40SPF $15 Badger is a super rad brand. This is reef-friendly, broad-spectrum water-resistant baby sunscreen. They are a certified B-Corp and from what I’ve read, really walk-the-walk of being a “certifiably good” company. Other good brands that avoid potentially harmful ingredients are: Babo Botanticals, Earth Mama, Raw Elements, Pipette, Adorable Baby and Think Baby. <image:caption>Pipette Baby Lotion $8 We don’t apply lotion often to our baby. We typically only put it on after her bath if her skin is feeling dry. A good friend of mine puts it on her daughter every night. I’m sure either option is totally fine. My daughter just doesn’t really love it so we don’t push it. I’ve been really happy with the Pipette Brand and they have a variety of options for nourishing your baby’s skin from this light lotion to balms, oils, and eczema creams.</image:caption>

I wish I would have bought this instead of using my meat thermometer to check all of my daughters bottles. I know they say rectal thermometers are the best for the first 3 months but I feel like this would be accurate enough to know if you need to call the doc. (Not a doctor! Don’t quote me on that!) I’m just saying, sometimes it’s tough to get a “quick” rectal read if your baby, like ours, gets real wiggly when you lay her on her changing mat…</image:caption>

<image:caption>Toki Mats Standard Padded Play Mat (w/ Organic Insert) $215 I severely underestimated the amount of time I would spend on the floor as a new mom. I also underestimated the amount of laying on the floor my baby would do. I was recommended these mats and I didn’t end up getting one. I still regret that. I ended up just using a quilt on a rug but it’s still pretty hard on our wood floors. If you have a “baby zone” on hard wood floors, I’d highly recommend a mat of some kind. The Toki brand is organic and has a removable cover that can be washed (or swapped out) which makes it really nice. Lots of nice designs as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lovevery The Play Gym $140 Lovevery is the chefs kiss* of baby/toddler-focused developmental toys. This play gym is no exception. At 13 months, my daughter still finds way to have fun in hers. Every element is so thoughtful from the black and white high-contrast cards, to the bright “zones” you can open or close. It’s definitely a well-thought out piece. They have a monthly subscription service which seems amazing, although I didn’t do it. <image:caption>BABYBJÖRN Bouncer Balance Soft $209 I was recommended this and thought, dang, that seems like a lot for a bouncer! And it is. But this is probably one of our top 3 favorite items. This gave us the freedom we needed and at times was the only thing that would calm our little one. It was nice looking, washed easily, and packs flat so it was simple to bring with along with us if we were visiting friends/family. The only downside in my mind is that, although it says it’s for kids up to 29lbs we stopped using it as soon as our daughter could sit up on her own. That ends up being a pretty short window for the price tag.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wee Gallery Art Cards for Baby $14 I didn’t really know that babies are super drawn to black-and-white designs when they are young. These are perfect to show them when they are teeny tiny. Since they are so beautifully designed, they are also great to use as your baby ages to point out parts of the body (“Nose” “ears” “legs”) and later to use for animal recognition. Note: This would also be a super affordable way to hang an art “series” in your nursery. Just frame your favorite set!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Primary - Baby Park Puffer Suit $54 Depending on the season your baby is born - and the climate where you live - baby bunting is great for keeping them warm before they are ready to truly play in the cold weather. You could always get a “stroller bunting” that slips right into the seat. You don’t really need both. Patagonia (a brand I do love) has a great option if you think you’ll be outdoors a fair amount. They are kind of pricey though so if you’re looking for a deal, check out Patagonia’s “wornwear” store for lightly used options - or Ebay usually has a good selection! If you don’t anticipate you’ll need this often, Primary and others have more affordable options. (And are made from 100% recycled material.)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Etsy, Alissah Threads $26 A cute sun hat is not only an adorable accessory but super practical because babies are so sensitive to the sun. There are a lot of options on Etsy, but this shop is one of my faves. Just remember that babies grow FAST so be mindful of the size your buying based on the time of year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Halo Sleepsack Swaddle $22 Swaddles confused the hell out of me. There are a bajillion options and everyone swears by a different one. The Halo Sleepsack was our favorite, primarily because it was so user-friendly. We definitely rotated through a few though. Every baby responds differently to them, so don’t worry if one style doesn’t land with yours. (These are great items to get used from friends for that very reason!)</image:caption>

Once they start to walk (but aren’t yet wearing shoes a whole lot) you’ll definitely want socks with little grippers to help with their stability. These 100% organic cotton socks from Burt’s Bees are a nice option but there are also a ton of fun bright colored ones out there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>WubbaNub Infant Pacifier $16 This is the top of my list because these little guys are my favorite. The nipple is silicone (Latax, BPA, PVC and Phthalate free!) and you can toss them in the wash to clean them. Our daughter loves hers and so did my nieces and nephew, who also had them. She RARELY picked up any other binkies (as we refer to them). She did use the infant binky she got from the hospital for her first few weeks/months but we swapped her to this ~3 months.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Friends, I saw the “zippers only!” memes and read the joking-but-serious-angry comments on parenting instagram posts about buttons being the bain of their existence. I still didn’t listen. I was wrong. A few snap outfits, sure, fine, but for those early months, do yourself a favor and keep things easier with zippers or even the new magnetic onesies. I recently saw a post from a trusted source on eco-friendly clothing brands and many also happened to be the brands I also like: Colored Organics, Hanna Andersson, Kyte Baby, Monica + Andy, plus a few more I haven’t tried yet: Le Petit Organic, Baby Moi and Finn + Emma. My rec for number of onesies would be: One Preemie to bring to the hospital (just in case your babe is a tiny little nugget), ~five Newborn onesies, ~five 0-3 Months, ~five 3-6 Months, ~five 6-9 Months. (They sleep and live in them for a while!) BabyList has a good guide as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>VTech Audio Baby Monitor $18 We bought an expensive “Low EMF” monitor and ended up kind of hating it. Neither of us liked having the video feed exclusively on our phones. Made us feel like we were constantly picking up our phones “just in case” and felt very distracted by it. Since it was connected to our wifi it also was a bit of a pain to easily bring with us on-the-go. We swapped it out for a super cheapy analog sound-only baby monitor which also happens to be low EMF. Our bedroom is across the hall from the nursery so we only really turn it on if we’re going to be out of earshot. Wish I would have just started with this one!</image:caption>

Pottery Barn has some BEAUTIES but they are definitely an investment piece. Note: If you’re looking to save space you might want to consider a recliner vs. a chair + an ottoman.</image:caption>

I was also trying to find one that was easy to clean. This one suggests sterilizing with vinegar/water once a week. Since we only really use it in the winter that hasn’t been too annoying to accomplish. There is a dim nightlight element to this humidifier so if you’re an anti-light purist, that might drive you nuts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I bought one of these beautiful handwoven basket bassinets. It was one item I really wanted. Our baby slept in that thing for maybe 8 weeks before she seemed too big for it! We still wanted her to sleep in our room so we switched her to a Pack’n’Play before eventually moving her into her crib in her own room ~3-4 months. Different people have different experiences with bassinets but this would definitely be an item I’d either try to get from a friend or used. If you decide to buy new, my personal rec would be don’t spend a ton of $$ on it. If you opt for a different brand, I’d recommend still looking for one that has 2-stage firmness, which means it has a firmer side for infants and a medium-firm side for toddlers. Other brands that were recommended (and had similar standards for not containing parabens, phthalates, fragrance, cholorine, artificial dyes, lotion or were petroleum based) were: poof, dyper, eco boom, andy pandy, thrive, honest, hello bello and pampers pure.</image:caption>

That does not mean it won’t smell. You gotta change this baby often. I like the look and that it has a lock feature because once the little ones are mobile, they will absolutely try to get into the diaper pails. I also like that it just takes normal trash bags. Down side - you do have to use your hand to open it (vs. a foot pedal) so take that into consideration when making your own seleciton.</image:caption>

It’s nice, it works. I have no complains, aside for it’s unoriginality. If I were to do it again, I don’t think I would get a “diaper bag” - I would just get a backpack that I liked that had a front pocket where things are easy to access. The one I’ve linked here does happen to be designed as a diaper bag so it has nice features (it’s wipeable, comes with a changing pad, etc.) but you could easily just buy a changing pad and pack a little cooler vs. feeling like you must find a bag with insulated pockets. My sister gave me an extra pack from her son and I totally forgot about them until one night I had already changed 3 outfits and 3 sets of sheets and, in desperation, I peeked in the bag of “you might need this stuff at some point” to see if there was anything that could help and - ta, da! There they were! We used them for a few months at night and they were a huge help. Some need them longer and some never need them. The last thing I wanted was more pourous surfaces around the diapering process. This is ideal. It is also made of a waterproof, nontoxic Dura-soft material so it’s firm but comfortable for your baby.</image:caption>

Chapped cheeks? Also, yes. Well, this is one of those areas where I opted for the lore of mothers before me instead of choosing a super natural product. It has worked well for us and we have hardly had an issue with diaper rashes. Side Note: When our daughter was really little we used pure coconut oil after every diaper as a barrier. We only used diaper cream when she appeared red or irritated.</image:caption>

It may not seem sexy but they are so necessary. Hello Bello is a brand I wasn’t so sure about at the beginning (it’s owned by Kristin Bell & Dax Shepard so felt a little “celeb baby” for me) but they are high quality and super affordable. Hypoallergenic, vegan and cruelty-free, fragrance free, pH balanced, plant-based cloth and without alcohol, parabens, and other harmful additives. Big fan. (They are also widely available so I can either grab them at my local grocery store or online.)</image:caption>

Rubber mats seemed to be the answer but they are harder to find. Make sure whatever you decide to get is machine washable because that’s one way to ensure it stays safe for your little one. ErgoBaby is a very reputable brand and has thought of all the little design details to make these work well for parents and their little ones. <image:caption>BABYBJÖRN Travel Crib Light $225 I would consider Pack’n Plays an OPTIONAL registry item unless you see yourself traveling to cottages/cabins/airbnbs or doing overnights at your friends or families. Most hotels can provide cribs or pack’n’plays. We got one from a friend and have definitely used it but this could certainly be something you “wait and see” before purchasing. <image:caption>Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat & Base $330 Okay, first, I should note that you will only use an infant car seat for around a year. One things to consider is whether your car seat is compatible with your stroller. I would recommend it is. You can buy adapters if it’s not. I wish I had done that. I wanted this car seat because it ranked high in comfort, sustainability and safety. It’s not cheap though. There are MANY great car seats out there so I’m not beholden to this particular brand. If you have two cars, I would definitely recommend getting a second base.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Solly Wraps $69-$76 My friends who have more than one kid definitely used these more than I did. They were nice for around the house and walking outside in nice weather though. Being hands free for periods of time is a gift when they are really little. Another perk is that this position can be very calming for babies so there were times when we used this just to help our daughter take a nap. Solly is a great brand with high-quality, sustainable fabric. There are also plenty of great other brands so you could definitely seek out other styles or price-points without losing the functionality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>UppaBaby Vista Stroller - $999 My car seat (above) did not clip into my stroller. You can get adapters for ~$50 new (or much less used) for most strollers but, for some reason, I didn’t do that. Not my smartest move. I will also say that strollers are expensive and they are bulky. If you can get a used one from a friend, do it. I’m already about to get a smaller, more lightweight stroller that’ll be easier to load/unload and my daughter is only one so I’m glad I accepted a hand-me-down. (It was an Uppababy though, so, it was a pretty nice hand-me-down!)</image:caption>

We have this and bring it with us to any location we don’t expect to have a height chair, like a friends or family members’ house that doesn’t have young kids. Some people gave me a hard time about it but they worked great and never felt particularly fragile. Before I had a baby I did NOT know that nipples came in different sizes. Many people hire doulas to help them in labor, which is amazing, but we actually ended up having a doula come and help us after our baby was born. She came over multiple times to help answer questions, watch/change/feed the babe and provide some light support with household tasks. Doulas provide classes, overnight support, and so much more. Highly recommend this option. I’ve linked to the local doula team that I worked with but if you’re not in West Michigan, you could certainly look into what’s available in your area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Amazon 14-Pack Organic Nursing Pads - $16 If sustainability is something you’re after, grab some washable nursing pads. However, you might not be doing *your* laundry as frequently as you’d like, so definitely get some disposable options for when you’re in a crunch. (Or if you’d rather just go that route all together!) I definitely did both.</image:caption>

Know that from this point forward, you will always want pockets. *I do not have this exact sweater, I have an oldie from Aerie that was/is my bff sweater. <image:caption>Kindred Bravely Betsy Bamboo Henley Nursing Nightgown | Long Sleeve Maternity Nightgown - $50 I loved the comfort of nursing nightgowns! If you don’t really like nightgowns, skip it. This one in particular has a built in bra which felt like a bit of a relief from the constant bra-wearing. (I hadn’t thought about the fact that I would be wearing a bra 24/7 for the entire duration that you’re breastfeeding so I considered this a ‘little win’ - not sure it would be supportive enough for my bigger breasted friends though.</image:caption>

Long Road Distillers' "Michigin" is crafted from 100 percent Michigan ingredients, including water fresh from Lake Michigan and juniper harvested on Beaver Island. It was named "Best Gin in the World" in July and sold out soon after the award was announced. Good news: they have it at the distillery now! And at Art of the Table!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Words - A Heavily Michigan Inspired Holiday Gift Guide - Cleaning Service</image:title>
<image:caption>This is pretty much the ultimate gift. Gift your sweetie or early-in-career kiddo a year of house-cleaning and they will love you more than you thought possible. Home cleaning for a small-to-moderate home typically ranges from $60-90 and is recommended twice/month. If you have friends that use someone they love, I'd suggest asking for their contact info. Makes it easier on the cleaner to be in the same general geo.</image:caption>

I finally bit the bullet earlier this year and got the interior/exterior package at Crystal Clean (owned by a fellow Forest Hills Ranger - heyo!) and I was thrilled with the results. <image:title>Words - A Heavily Michigan Inspired Holiday Gift Guide - Creative Class(es)</image:title>
<image:caption>There are so many fun options for creative classes. Choose an experience over a gift and grab a 2-person class at one of these locations: - Light Gallery offers awesome classes, such as “Tapestry for Beginners” - they don't have classes for '18 posted yet but I'd bet you could holla at them for a gift cert. - Kendall College Continuing Studies - Options from Abstract Painting for Adults (~$250 for 7 weeks!) to Junior Architect courses for kids. Full line-up. - Sur La Table - TONS of options! Anything from “Croissants from Scratch” to “Meatless Monday” - Nick is a great instructor, so I’d recommend going to one of his classes. :) - Downtown Market - A few upcoming classes in January include “Winter Nights in Italy”, “Warm Up the Irish Way”, “Empandada-Rama” - all sound pretty fun to me! (~$75/person) - Wax Poetic Candle Bar - Pour your own candles together! Groups of 1-4 don’t need reservations ahead of time.</image:caption>
